Until about 2011, the centerfire Savage Axis rifles were known as the Savage Edge family of single-bolt action rifles, but there were some difficulties with that name, hence the Axis rebranding. But other than the name change, the guns stayed the same.
But now the Axis family has further proliferated. As of this writing, there are 24 guns in Savage’s Axis and the newer Axis II series of affordable high accuracy value rifles. Note: the Axis II rifles gently updates the Axis I’s stock’s shape for improved ergonomics.
All 24 Savage Axis I and Savage Axis II guns are single-bolt action rifles and except a couple, they all have four round detachable box magazines, the same Axis I or Axis II polymer stock, etc. Outliers for this and much of the narrative that follows are the wooden stock Axis II XP Hardwood and aluminum chassis Axis II Precision.
From this common base, they vary in caliber, barrel length and type. Various options come with or without sights, a scope rail, scope, threaded muzzle or camouflage. Calibers include 223 REM, 7mm-08 REM, 243 WIN, 22-250 REM, etc.
Like many other Savage guns, barrels are generally matte black carbon steel while gunstocks are matte synthetic and often camouflaged. A very nice touch are the large, glove-friendly safeties. Both the fore stock and the ergonomically curved grip have nice built-in finger contours.
Being as affordable as they are, Savage Axis rifles lack Savage’s patented AccuFrame, AccuTrigger and AccuFit components that feature prominently on Savage 110, Savage 212, Savage 220 and other more expensive Savage guns. On the other hand, these budget rifles are robust, very reliable and remarkably affordable for what they do.
